The City of Olathe, located in the suburb of Kansas City, is seeking a motivated and collaborative candidate to join our Environmental Services team as a Chemist working at the Environmental Laboratory. Built in 2017, the City of Olathe Environmental Laboratory is equipped with advanced technologies to analyze water and wastewater samples today and into the future. The laboratory is NELAC Accredited and maintains a scope of accreditation for both drinking water and non-potable water that supports the data reporting requirements of the Safe Drinking Water and Clean Water Acts. Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and analyze water and wastewater samples for chemical and microbiological contaminants while adhering to safety, test method, and quality system protocols.
  • Routinely operate and maintain analytical instrumentation, including ICP-OES, ICP-MS, Ion Chromatograph, Discreet Analyzer, Auto-titrator, and BOD analyzer. 
  • Analyze water and wastewater samples for Total coliform and E. coli using SM 9223 B.
  • Learn and follow the requirements of the Laboratory Quality System. Establish and maintain acceptable performance via demonstrations of capability and acceptable performance on proficiency tests. Participate in corrective actions and laboratory improvement initiatives.
  • Utilize the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to track chains of custody, receive samples, batch out analysis, record standard and reagent preparation, enter results, review data, and track instrument maintenance.
  • Respond to City of Olathe water customer concerns related to water quality and participate in field and customer concern sampling when needed. Provide technical support to field laboratories at the water and wastewater plants.
  • Participate in weekend and on-call work, as necessary.

Pay Range

$26.37 – $32.91
